Heya and welcome back to Five Things Running!
The year feels old already and I stopped wishing people a happy new year a week ago or so, but I haven’t yet found my running mojo. On Sunday my Oura ring complained that I have been doing too much resting and that I should get some exercise in. My ring was right and I got a healthy dose of vitamin D when the sun finally came out after a week of mostly grey skies in Hamburg.
As I’m reading through running-related websites and newsletters for this newsletter, I stumble across so many articles that explain in many words and lots of detail how to dress for colder temperatures. Is this really that complicated? Add a layer or two, wear tights, wear gloves, wear a beanie. Done. I understand that they all have their SEO requirements and want to sell stuff, but really, don’t overthink it. When I was in Tromsø, Norway, six years ago, I ran through plenty of snow and it was at least -10°C and it was dark all day long. I didn’t need any special gear for that, just more layers. When I read those articles, I always wonder if they really have readers who say “wow, gloves, great idea! I was wondering how I could avoid having numb fingers! I’ll try that!” - I mean, seriously, some sort of combination of common sense and listening to your body helps in most situations when running. It also applies to many other aspects of life.
Anyhow, here’s this week’s Five Things Running!
What do you do when you can't run?
I hate it when I can’t run. I oftentimes wish Strava had some sort of button to signal to the other runners that I want to run, but cannot run and then state a reason. I assume that the other runners don’t care at all, but I do care. I’m glad
got to go back to see his house intact after being evacuated. I once did a run where the eton fire was blazing and I very much liked the canyon I explored on my run. I can’t imagine what it must be like right now in LA.I Dread the Long Run Like Nothing Else
I can totally relate. Everytime I embark on a long run I start to wonder if I can actually do it and it takes me a while to just get going and once I’m actually running, everything is fine.
What It Means To “Base Build” And How To Do It
This article is a timely reminder for all you runners out there that want to run a marathon this summer. Start stacking blocks! Or in my case: I need to resume stacking blocks.
Vessel Athletics Founder on Developing a Running Hydration Shirt
When I first noticed Vessel Athletics, I thought it is a novel idea, but nothing I’d be using anytime soon. As an entrepreneur myself, I’m always rooting for the entrepreneur, so I enjoyed this interview with the founder Jasmine Sanchez. I still think a bottle in my hand or a running vest would just be fine for me. Would you try this hydration shirt?
6 European Trail Races to Put on Your 2025 Bucket List
There are so many trail races in Europe. When I visited Croatia last summer, I looked into local races, but couldn’t find any that were taking place while I was there. But then I noticed lots of races in Croatia and in nearby Slovenia, that I had never heard of and that looked spectacular. I am currently thinking about the Rennsteig Marathon or Supermarathon (73,9 km), and the Northernmost Ultra in Germany is also under consideration: North Sea Ultra, with no vert, but lots of wind.
I’m grateful for the partners of Five Things Running: Acid Running, New Balance and Coros!
