Five Things Running: Issue #65
I'm so frustrated about the EU elections, I need to run lots more to compensate.
Heya, welcome back to Five Things Running!
My name is Nico, I’m a runner who likes to read about running - and I also like to share the five most interesting articles each week with you. So if you haven’t already, please subscribe to Five Things Running and also go paid, please. I put in lots of hours each week so that you can read the best articles.
So my last week was a really nice week with lots of running. I managed to get 80km in and ran on six days. My long run on Sunday was a nice 30km run along the Alster River Valley and I enjoyed it tremendously. I got in 108m of vert by just crossing bridges all the time, that’s how we do it here in Hamburg.
Last week I also realized that the 50k Rosengarten Ultra Heide Marathon (RUHM = “fame”) I wanted to sign up for is sold out already, which really bummed me a lot. In the last few years I had too many injuries and also COVID-19 twice that set me back in my training or prevented me from taking part in race outright. So I spent quite some money on races that I didn’t even got to the startline for. So now I’m a bit hesitant to register in time for races. Also I’m more the spontaneous type anyways. I guess I’ll just keep running and hope that I find a race that looks doable for me and also is a bit different from the typical 10k road race.
How Friday night running became more popular than going down to the pub
“On TikTok, the #RunTok hashtag has had over 3.4 billion views. As Gen Z’s alcohol consumption has dropped – 25 per cent over the last four years – so running has overtaken night clubs as the new hub for socialising.“ - wow, that’s really a wonderful development, unless of course you own a pub.
The Sublime Clarity Of Goo
“The idea that “food is fuel” is often used by proponents of certain fads seeking to move humans past the joy and necessity of eating. Goos prove the sentiment right, but the food nihilism of those movements wrong. It is fuel, but in the literal sense—not a tasteless replacement for something else, but as a super-flavored combustion source for the human engine. Never is that clearer than after about an hour and 20 minutes of movement, when the body’s stored glycogen has been depleted and there’s nothing left to run on, until, squeeze, there is.” - I like gels, but some more than others. I especially like how the gels kick in on the long run.
What We Can Learn from the Awesome Sauce Debacle
So basically we should hope that this was the big exemption and all the other gels are doing what they are supposed to be doing. I still think this should be better regulated.
Get strong, run faster - have you been neglecting strength training?
Yes, I have. Thankfully, this article gives not just good reasons for strength training, but also some ideas on what to do. And I will need to get back to my regular kettlebell exercises…
Why ‘jogging’ is a loaded term
What
writes about the term “jogging” pretty much resonates with me. For me, jogging sounds so 80s, so neon and totally unspired. I’m a runner. I run.If you missed last week’s edition, you can read it here:
Now, go running!
