Heya, welcome back to Five Things Running!
My name is Nico, I’m a runner who likes to read about running - and I also like to share the five most interesting articles each week with you. So if you haven’t already, please subscribe to Five Things Running and also go paid, please. I put in lots of hours each week so that you can read the best articles.
So I kicked off June with a nice 30 km run through the Alster River Valley here in Hamburg. It was a nice end of a week that started with a 6km run and then weird foot pain that came and went until Saturday, when it was suddenly gone for good. I like the lush green forests this time of the year and I’m glad I was able to spend some time running on a nice Sunday morning.
I ran in my New Balance Fresh Foam X Hierro v8 that New Balance sent my way a few weeks ago. After almost 100 km in these shoes, I can safely say that they are pretty amazing for my kind of running, which is mostly on gravel and on soft forest trails. Nice and cushy, but not too much, and the Vibram sole ist just right for my terrain!
The only thing that sucked: all of a sudden one of the soft flasks in my running vest started leaking and before I realized what was happening, I was wet on the left side of my body. By the way, I just love my Amphipod Hydraform Handheld that I’ve been using for years now. It keeps the water nice and cold even while holding it in my hand while running.
Before we get on with Five Things Running, I have two request:

Sneaker Rivals Race to Find the Next Super Foam
“Cushioning was always a priority for running shoes. But in the past companies balanced it against factors like stability, durability or weight. That changed about a decade ago when Hoka went all in on foam.“ - it’s amazing how the running shoe industry changed and I’m sure it will change more.
Getting Lost in the Sauce: Spring Energy’s Popular Gel Under Scrutiny
I used the Awesome Sauce a few times and I really liked it. It was just too expensive for me. I’m a recreational runner and I don’t feel like spending 4€ on a packet of energy, because that adds up fast. Anyhow, it’s good that people dug into this and I’m really curious how Spring Energy will try to regain trust.
Fueling the Distance: Why Protein Is Crucial for Runners
“If you’re a runner who wants to stay strong, healthy, and run long into your golden years, protein is a friend you’ll want to make and keep. Together, optimal protein and carbohydrate intake will help you go the distance and enjoy a healthy running career.” - ha, golden years, they’ve got my attention now! And yes, protein is something I’m really focusing on.
Why You Need to Rethink Running Slow
Whenever I get people commenting “nice pace” on a run of mine, I’m thinking “well yeah, Zone2, that’s all I wanted to do and for good reason.”
