Five Things Running: Issue #61
Before you go out for your morning run, you should read this.
Heya, welcome back to Five Things Running!
My name is Nico, I’m a runner who likes to read about running - and I also like to share the five most interesting articles each week with you. So if you haven’t already, please subscribe to Five Things Running and also go paid, please. I put in lots of hours each week so that you can read the best articles.
Last week I finally got to run a lot again, reaching more than 70 kilometers, which is a lot for me. I also did two small group runs, which I usually don’t do, and ran with people from out of town who attended the OMR Festival in Hamburg. On Sunday I ran in a nature reserve at the Northern edge of Hamburg, where I haven’t run before. It was beautiful and very empty. My original plan was to drive to my hometown and run around a bunch of lakes there, but then I had a slow morning and decided that I would run somewhere close by and then it turned out that I probably saved 10 minutes driving time. Anyhow, it was a great run in a fantastic part of nature. And there were cows!
Next time I need to find some hills again. Why? Read the next article and find out!
She’s the First Woman to Finish the Barkley Marathons—Ever. Here’s How She Did It.
Now that I know how Jasmin Paris trained, I still don’t think the Barkley Marathons would be something I should even remotely try. Still, it’s a bit comforting to find out that she was able to do this training while living a normal life with job and family.
Run Walk Run. The Jeff Behind Jeff-ing
“Galloway, 77, has become one of the most influential running coaches in the U.S., even with that contradiction of “Walk” as part of his regimen. It has been estimated his eco-system has included at least a million people since the first group he prodded along at that public park. Many of his disciples are older and Run Walk Run has convinced them the sport is holding the door open for them.” - I never did this, because I’m too impatient, but I see how it helps people to get moving.
An Ode to the Hometown Race
I don’t have a race in my hometown, but close enough, a race in the next town, where I went to school. It’s called the Adventslauf and it takes place on the first Advent Sunday, which means it is always the beginning of the christmas season in Germany, obviously paired with icky weather. But the race is very special to me. Also a few years ago I got to run the Des Moines Marathon and got to experience the town in a totally different way, seeing lots of places I remembered from my time there as a senior in high school. Also, I was the fastest German in the race, that probably counts for something as well!
Race nutrition: how to make your own running gels
I hate to spend so much money on energy gels. Also, I mostly don’t enjoy most of them as they taste “interesting”, but never particularly yummy. I’m using honey a lot as an alternative that also has to artificial stuff in it. I’m past the point that I think I need the latest Maurten tech. Are you making your own gels?
