you probably don't know this, but when a German in my age group reads the the name "John Maynard", we automatically start to recite the ballard by Theodor Fontane which starts with "John Maynard was our helmsman" and is about a fire onboard a ship from Buffalo, NY to Erie, PA in the mid-19th century. https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Maynard (sorry just found German sources for this...)
