Five Things AI: Human-AI Interaction, Hyperrealistic Deepfakes, Claude3 Opus Selfawareness, Saudi AI, GenAI Hype vs Reality
We're entering the next stage of AI everwhere.
Hi and welcome back to Five Things AI! My name is Nico Lumma and every week I like to share five interesting articles about AI with you. So instead of researching for hours on the web, just read these five articles here and you are all set. As I’m saving you a couple of hours every week, I’d really appreciate it if you could go paid and spend the equivalent of one large café latte on this newsletter.
Thanks!
The big development this week is probably the push towards the smartphone. Meta of course has indicated that llama3 will be integrated across their product line and also Apple and Microsoft have pointed out that they will soon have smaller models available for smartphones. This will change everything in AI, again. Just imagine how powerful this device will be and it is in the palm of your hand and your data can stay local as well. This will open up many new possibilities, for instance in health related topics.
Anyhow, on to Five Things AI now! Enjoy!
The race for human-AI interaction usage data is on—and the stakes are high
It’s been roughly 18 months since ChatGPT-3 was released and now we see how Meta is pushing the development of Llama3 in a direction that will enable its users to interact with AI on Facebook, Whatsapp, Insta and elsewhere. Will this create a loop that ensures better data quality through human interaction?
An AI startup made a hyperrealistic deepfake of me that’s so good it’s scary
“AI development moves at breakneck speed, and it is both exciting and daunting to consider what AI avatars will look like in just a few years. Maybe in the future we will have to adopt safewords to indicate that you are in fact communicating with a real human, not an AI.“ - Synthesia is really redefining how we work with avatars and digital twins. This space is fascinating and there’s so much development going on that will obviously change the way we use and interact with video. Oxolo from Hamburg is another great example from this space.
Claude 3 Opus has stunned AI researchers with its intellect and 'self-awareness' — does this mean it can think for itself?
“[…]Claude 3 is impressive in more ways than simply acing its benchmarking tests — the LLM shocked experts with its apparent signs of awareness and self-actualization. There is a lot of scope for skepticism here, however, with LLM-based AIs arguably excelling at learning how to mimic human reactions rather than actually generating original thoughts.” - this gives some serious HAL3000 vibes, doesn’t it?
‘To the Future’: Saudi Arabia Spends Big to Become an A.I. Superpower
Saudi Arabia is doing the right thing here. Just like UAE, the Saudis are deploying massive amounts of capital into AI with the aim to achieve a competitive advantage in a new and emerging market. As we have seen in the last few years, AI development needs lots of cash and lots of well-educated people - and failing to provide this means being left behind in the AI race. Meanwhile, Germany is starting to think about entering the race.
GenAI: Hype vs Reality?
is taking a look at the Gartner Hypecycle and the current state of AI. Being a VC, he analyzes available data around AI development and tries to make sense of the hype and anxiety around AI. If you missed last week’s edition of Five Things AI, you can read it here:
The question of AI’s ability to “think” will never not be fascinating. What is “thinking”? What is consciousness? What if it’s had billions of years to evolve, like we have? It’s a philosophical treasure trove.
