Five Things: War in Ukraine, Art in Shelter, Stadtderby, AI as new McKinsey, Connie
Sunday Morning starts here. But if you're too busy waking up, you can read this in the afternoon as well.
Howdy! Thanks for opening this email. Now enjoy this edition of Five Things!✌🏻
Hi, my name is Nico and I’m a very curious person who likes reading great journalism, well argued opinion pieces and lengthy articles full of research. Every Sunday I put together an email with links to five articles which I find really interesting. The selection of the articles is based on my current interests. I sincerely hope that you find these articles as worthwile your time as I did. I don’t wan’t to ruin your Sunday. 🤓
This week was exhausting. For two days 70,000 people attended OMR Festival in Hamburg and I was one them, enjoying the many side-events, presentations, talks and conversations with countless people. And the realization that people come in different shapes and sizes and are more than faces in Zoom rectangles. Is Zoom still a thing? Anyhow, it was good to experience so many people without masks and all the fear of a pandemic. I do have a runny nose now, but it’s probably nothing.
Have a great Sunday and enjoy Five Things! ✌🏻
Beyond Ukraine’s Offensive
While we wait for the Ukrainian offensive to happen, which will hopefully drive the Russians out of Ukrainian territory, it is necessary to discuss what needs to be done to stabilize the region and to make sure that Russia won’t try an invasion in Central Europe again. (Foreign Affairs)
Pass the paint and mind the shrapnel: inside Ukraine’s most creative bomb shelter
It continues to amaze me how the people in Ukraine deal with the war. Art is a good way to express feelings, but doing this in a bomb shelter adds a totally new perspective. (The Guardian)
Derby Days, Hamburg: The Stadtderby
There’s no game that is more important than the home game agains St. Pauli. And we won it this season. I like this soccer rivalry, but some people do get a bit too emotional. It’s only soccer. Haha. No, it’s more than that. It defines who reigns in the city. Nur der HSV! (The Athletic)
Will A.I. Become the New McKinsey?
The big question is: what will lead to better results? An army of highly paid consultants or a well-trained Large Language Model with a clever people at the prompts? And will executives accept the results of the AI? (New Yorker)
Why Are There So Many Asian American Women Named Connie?
I remember that I was a bit confused when I was a student in Berkeley in the Mid-Nineties about all those female Asian-American students called Connie. But I didn’t think much about it. Now, almost 30 years later, this article finally explains it too me. Now I just need to understand why so many female Asian-American students wore white socks in Adidas shower sandals for class. This image has been engrained in my brain and it is still hard to comprehend. (The New York Times)
That’s it. Have an amazing Sunday!
