Five Things Tech: Reckoning & Resiliance, Defense, EU App Store, NSA, Mac
It's Tech Saturday! Read these Five Things now!
Gooooood Morning! Just a quick reminder if you’re opening this email and are kind of wondering why you are reading this. You probably subscribed to Five Things for some reason or another. Today is Saturday and it’s time for Five Things Tech. My name is Nico Lumma and I have been involved in the German tech scene since before the dawn of time, basically. And with time I mean before the interwebs got popular. For the last two decades or so I have been working in the startup industry in one capacity or another, as a CTO, as a founder, as an investment scout aka truffle pig, and as an investor. I enjoy working with startups and like to help them grow by sharing my experience and my network. This is the reason why I am writing Five Things. Sharing is caring. I read a lot, not because I have to, but because I want to. Every Saturday I share five of the most noteworthy articles about the wonderful world of tech with you. Every week the focus of the articles is a bit different, which always depends on what I am particularly interest in that week. So somehow you get a little peek into my brain, if you will.
So, now that you know why you’re here, please go ahead and benefit from the New Year’s Special by going paid right away. You will see that the articles are even better once you’ve taken this step. Or maybe they just seem more valuable to you then. Who knows? You should try it!
2024: A Year Of Reckoning And Resilience For Startups And VCs
So, how will this year be? Tough? Joyride? Somewhere inbetween? I hope there will be more VC looking beyond the hype and investing in substance, but a guy can still dream, right?
Investors Are Betting on Defense Startups. The Pentagon Isn’t.
One of the outcomes of the Russian war on Ukraine is an increase in defense spending. We know that the Ukrainian army is heavily relying on a combination of low-tech hardware and state-of-the-art software. Israel is also using the latest tech to defend against the terrorists in Gaza. But it seems that the big spending is happening elsewhere.
Apple's rivals aren't happy about its EU App Store changes
Apple had to play by the EU rules and offered the possibility for side-loading seperate app stores. This sounds pretty good, but yet competitors are not so happy about it. Guess what: it’s about money.
N.S.A. Buys Americans’ Internet Data Without Warrants, Letter Says
Are you as shocked as I am? Honestly, I was always certain that the NSA does whatever it can to screen as much internet traffic as possible. So I am not surprised at all.
Apple Shares the Secret of Why the 40-Year-Old Mac Still Rules
I still remember the day when I visited my aunt and uncle forty years ago and my uncle showed me his new Mac. I don’t think I left his office at all that afternoon while everybody else was celebrating a birthday or so. Wow. That was an amazing experience. I got my first Mac 30 years ago and I still shudder when I see a Windows OS in action.
That’s all for Five Things Tech this week! Remember to go paid now! Really. It’s good for tech as I can buy more gadgets!
