Hello and welcome back to Five Things Tech!
I’m writing this newsletter while being at the Rocketeer Festival in Augsburg, Bavaria, which is one of my favorite conferences as it creates a good setting for startups and established companies to exchange ideas. I gave a keynote on controlled irritations and how startups and corporates can work together for mutual benefit. It’s good to back on the conference circuit a bit. This is something I enjoyed a lot before the pandamic and I do it a lot less now, but it was so good to be back out there, mingling with people, sharing ideas, listening to new concepts and business models. Also, I enjoyed the great beers at Riegele, which is always worth a visit.
Let’s dig right into this week’s Five Things Tech!
The Internet and Climate Change
“On the one hand, the Internet is a tremendous force for good in helping reduce the greenhouse gases we may individually create and in connecting all the people working on climate solutions around the world. On the other hand, by its very nature, the Internet requires electricity to operate, and the devices we all use require the extraction of minerals and create vast amounts of e-waste. And, in the face of climate change, the Internet’s infrastructure needs our help to be able to continue to operate.”
F.C.C. Votes to Restore Net Neutrality Rules
This is huge. I cannot emphasize enough how important net neutrality is. Every packet needs to be treated alike, otherwise we risk the free flow of information.
We Need To Rewild The Internet
I really miss the mid-90s, when the commercialization of the web started, but there was still so much other stuff around, that was weird and new and we all hoped that somehow this could stay this way. Turns out, that it didn’t and now we have a couple of platforms that capture our eyeballs.
A Paradigm Shift in RAM Is About to Make Computing Unstoppable
This sounds fascinating. I do have to admit that I would have to explain how this works to other people, but it does sound cool.
Imagining an internet without TikTok
I’m not a big fan of TikTok and I would like to see more and better regulation when it comes to feeding content to people based on algorithms. When India banned TikTok, Insta and Youtube took its spot. How much better would this be?
That’s all for now! Thanks for reading! If you missed last week’s Five Things Tech, you can find it here:
