Five Things Tech: Apple Vision Pro, Read Write Own, Fediverse, Trillions, Smart Toothbrush Botnet
I think you should read this.
Here we go again! It’s Saturday and you are reading Five Things Tech! The newsletter with five handpicked stories about tech that I chose from the vast and seemingly endless pool of tech articles out there. My name is Nico Lumma, I haven’t been offline since 1995 and I like to understand how and why tech is evolving. That’s why I’m reading a lot and as sharing is caring, I let you benefit from my appetite for tech.

Apple Vision Pro Owners Are Struggling to Figure Out What They Just Bought
I read quite a bit about the new Apple Vision Pro and to me it seems it is a technical marvel, really advanced and very cool. Also it lacks a real usecase. This will probably change soon, and with soon I mean five to ten years. I do think that Apple really is pushing XR, or spatial computing, as they call it, forward, but we’re still in the early years. I cannot see myself wearing these goggles for longer than 15 mins, no matter how cool all the tech is.
Review: Chris Dixon's Read Write Own
I’ve been reading a lot of stuff Chris Dixon wrote over the last few years and he’s very outspoken on all things related to blockchain. It’s refreshing how Molly White is taking apart his arguments.
The fediverse, explained
Here’s a good primer on the newfangled federated services that a lot of people have been talking about for a while now. I tried to set up something like that in 2005, but I missed out on the status update as the most important thing for messaging, so I’m happy to see that an old idea finally gets broader support.
Sam Altman Seeks Trillions of Dollars to Reshape Business of Chips and AI
I have to admit that Sam Altman really likes bold moves. Let’s see how the semiconductor industry will react to his idea. Do you actually know how many zeros a trillion has?
The Viral Smart Toothbrush Botnet Story Almost Certainly Isn't Real
Awesome, brushing teeth is safe again. Interesting though, how comparatively easy it is to place a story like that.
That’s all for now! Thanks for reading!
