Five Things Tech: AI, TikTok, 3D printing, ChatGPT, Blue Pill or Red Pill?
What a week in Tech. This is what you have to know. Written by a human.
The pace of development in the tech world is breathtaking at the moment. It seeems that there is a new focus on innovation and development after a long period of growth and monetarisation. At the same time big tech is the second wave of firing tens of thousands of people. This has impact on other industries as well, but the outcomes will be different. While big tech leaps ahead with new tech, other industries step on the brake and sit on their money instead of investing it in people and tech. This will increase the lead of big tech.
With all the interesting stuff going on right now, please keep in mind the good old Gartner Hype Cycle that really helps figuring out where we are at the moment in the development of new technologies. The Metaverse has surpassed the Peak of Inflated Expectations and we now have to figure out where AI is now: Slope of Enlightenment or still just at the Innovation Trigger? We’ll soon find out. But for now, read on, my dear!
The Age of AI has begun
Bill Gates got a lot of things about the internet wrong in the 90s, but it is worth reading what he has to say about how AI changes everything now. And I have to agree that we’re entering the age of AI now. We will see many obvious improvements in the next few weeks and months as smart people figure out how to really delve into large piles of date. (Gates Notes)
What the US is missing about TikTok
The security concerns about TikTok are really just the tip of the iceberg. Western democracies need to understand that there is so much state-sponsored information warfare going on, that threatens our liberal societies. (CNN)
Has the 3D printing revolution finally arrived?
For a long time, people thought 3D printing was limited to printing little plastic gadgets or special small parts. But 3D printing has evolved quickly and can do so much more now, disrupting a few industries along the way. Amazing stuff. (The Guardian)
ChatGPT gets “eyes and ears” with plugins that can interface AI with the world
AI has been around for a while now - I have invested in startups in this space for the last 7 years, long before the term GenerativeAI was coined. But the pace of development has accelerated so much in the last few months ever since OpenAI started releasing ChatGPT. The new plugin architecture is just the beginning of the next chapter. Somebody said that this will be the age of AI, I tend to agree. (Ars Technica)
You Can Have the Blue Pill or the Red Pill, and We’re Out of Blue Pills
”We have summoned an alien intelligence. We don’t know much about it, except that it is extremely powerful, offers us bedazzling gifts, but could also hack the foundations of our civilization. We call upon world leaders to respond to this moment at the level of challenge it presents. The first step is to buy time to upgrade our 19th-century institutions for a post-A.I. world, and to learn to master A.I. before it masters us.” - Yuval Harari, a must read.
