Five Things: San Francisco, JD Vance, Data Centers, Scam, Point Break
Howdy! Read this mail now!
Goood Morning! It’s Sunday and you don’t need to get the paper, you can just read these Five Things! I put together five really interesting and very different stories for you to read.
My name is Nico Lumma and I constantly read lots of stuff on the interwebs. I’m always looking for interesting longreads, or intriguing shorter articles. Some articles are just beautifully written, others are thought provoking and sometimes I don’t agree at all with the author, but still think it is worth reading it.
So every issue is totally different, depending on what I find interesting in a given week.
I hope you like this selection. If you do, please consider to go paid!
In the Shadow of Silicon Valley
San Francisco used to be the crazy weird place on the left coast. The success of the Silicon Valley has created lots of billionaires with a libertarian mindset and over the last decades the billionaires used their money and their influence to push San Francisco to the right. The Hippie days are totally over.
Hillbilly energy
When I read Hillbilly Elegy, I was fascinated by the account of the demise of working class life in rural America. When JD Vance used his fame to start a VC for startups in rural America, I thought he is on the right track to re-ignite the rural economy. But then he decided to run for Senate after opposing Trump, he became a loyal follower. Let me put it this way: JD Vance is an interesting character and an influential one nonetheless.
Memory Machines
All over the world new data centers are being build and Ireland is no exception. Obviously, we all need data centers in one way or another and the energy footprint is immense. We now have everything at our fingertips and this changes so much.
The Day I Put $50,000 in a Shoe Box and Handed It to a Stranger
What a story. And what a scam.
The Point of “Point Break”
Point Break used to be one of my favorite movies. Then I watched it with my oldest kids a few years ago and it didn’t click anymore, we stopped watching after 45 minutes or so. Maybe I should watch it again.
That’s it. Have an amazing Sunday! And remember to go paid! It really improves the experience you’re having with this newsletter!
