Heya and welcome back to Five Things Running!
On Sunday Morning I drove down to the Harburg Mountains, which is about 30 minutes away from where I live and I had to cross the river Elbe which always feels like entering uncharted territory in a land far away. I took part in a community run organized by Trailrunning Hamburg Harburger Berge called Großer Winterspaß (great winter fun) and it was indeed lots of fun.
We ran 21,6 km through the forest and the heath and even climbed up to the highest summit in all of Hamburg: the world-famous Hasselbrack at a breathtaking 116,20 m above sea-level. We managed to survive the thin air without any additional breathing apparatus. The terrain was different every couple of hundred meters or so, changing from mud to sand to wet leaves, wet roots and wet rocks. We ran 500m of vert up and down many small hills and on a very basic dirt road I missed a rock and fell, again. I blame my wife for this. After my two falls this spring in the Harburg Mountains, which are actually hills, if you haven’t noticed by now, my wife would always say “don’t fall” when I went out to go running. It sounded like advice given to some old geezer in a retirement home when he stood up to walk three steps, which I found just a tad condescending. This time, she didn’t say “don’t fall!” because she was still asleep when I left. And I fell. I guess the case is clear. Also, next time I’ll wake her up!
Anyhow, I now really need new tights as they have a nice hole across my right knee… and I just had them mended because a seam came apart. Being the running fashionista that I am, I cannot decide which tights I should get. What are your recommendations? Janji? Tracksmith? Saysky? Or something more funtional and less fun fashion-wise like Fusion, Adidas or Gore?
Oh, and there’s one more thing: if you like newsletters about running (and you should!), then please have a look at this: Running on Substack: A directory of Substack newsletters devoted to running.

2024 Running x Fashion Trend Report
I am a big fan of running fashion. I think neon must die. I truly despise all these pure functional clothes that look like hard work and no fun. And I am so glad that running and lifestyle fashion are coming together. It reminds me a lot of skateboarding when it was cool, so basically when I skated back in the mid-80s…
5 Practices to Run Your Best Marathon
This is good advice and I think practice #3 is the most important one. Also, I promise not to write too many click-baity lines like this in the future.
Advice for New Ultrarunners
Ha. I knew it’s that easy to run ultras. And yes, I regret that I stopped running when I went to university and spent 20 years wrecking my body with beer and chips instead of ultras.
Am I sick? Should I still run?
Sometimes I think it is better to go running even though I feel sick. Sometimes I don’t. It just depends. But I usually think about running or not running a lot.
Make Your Own Energy Gels
I usually try something new during the week after Christmas and this sounds like a fun project as I really hate spending so much money on gels. Just using honey or maple syrup sounds a bit easier, though, so I’m still undecided if I should try this.
I’m grateful for the partners of Five Things Running: Acid Running, New Balance and Coros!

Appreciate the mention of my article here (clickbait headline and all). As a full-time marketing guy, I often battle the urge to "write for response." It's a sickness.😊
I live 45 meters above sea level, so I feel your pain, that thin air can be a struggle! 😄
As for tights recommendations, have you looked at rabbit? I own a few pairs and they’re my favorite (women’s, of course, but I assume the men’s would be of similar quality).
