Hello and welcome back to Five Things Running! I’m right now on vacation in a small town just a few kilometers away from Split in Croatia. I love it here. I’m here with my American family, there are at least 12 kids here, we have a nice pool, the beach is just 5 minutes away and we always have cool beer in the fridge. The locals here even have non-alcoholic Radler, which is just amazing after a run.
Also, it is around 35° Celsius here, so just a tad warmer than Northern Germany. When I go running here while on vacation, I make sure to leave the house by 7 am, otherwise it is too warm. To put that into perspective: the temperature here at 7 am is the hot noon temperature I avoid to run in when I’m in Hamburg. So yes, it is hot.
Right behind the house we have a mountain range with peaks of around 600 meters or so - and in front of the house there’s the Mediterranean Sea, so I get to choose between a flat route or vert or both.
On Sunday I wanted to run 17 km in the mountains and it turned out to be 22 km, but lots of hiking was included as I’m not really a mountain goat who could run across rocks and rubble. Anyhow, it was great and I got in as much vert as I usually get in a month. Also, it was a bit hot, but luckily Fractel gave this wonderful Legionnaire Hat to me and so I survived the heat without any sunburn. When I ran downhill with the hat I wasn’t sure if it felt like having long hair flying in wind, or just Dumbo-style ears. My kids refuse to be seen in public with me wearing this hat, so this is something I need to keep in mind when I need some time alone…
Anyhow, I can highly recommend this part of Europe for running!
I also did get some reading done, so please go on and read these Five Things Running!
4 Key Takeaways From My Experience at a Pro Runner’s Marathon Training Camp
This is something I’d love to experience myself: just focusing on running for a few days and working with a coach who can point me in to the right direction. It sounds like a fun and exhausting experience.
The Extra Mile
When you’ve been in a terrible accident and your doctors tell you that you’ll probably not be able to run again, what do you do? Right, you run ultras. What an amazing story.
The SportsCenter of Los Angeles running
explains how the issue of discoverability of run clubs in Los Angeles has been solved by Kate Olson (The L.A. Running Connoisseur). I like it when people see a problem as an opportunity and then develop something new. In this case, it is a vast resource about everything running in LA. A 12-Minute Workout to Build Foot Strength
I’m more than happy to admit that I am one of those people who know that strength training is so important for runners, but still don’t feel like doing it. Maybe I’ll do one of these routines soon. I know it would be good for me and my feet and my running.
What It’s Like to Run In the Hottest Place on Earth
There are a lot of iconic races I’d love to be able to run. Badwater 135 is not among them. This is just too hot. Why would anyone want to do this?
