Five Things Running: Issue #56
Spring has sprung, at least for one very warm weekend. And I didn't go running. sigh.
Heya, I hope you’re spending lots of time running! I’m doing a little break from running, again. Last Monday I went to the hills just south of Hamburg and ran 15 km through the beautiful heath landscape up and down those hills, and as I was trying to take a photo while running downhill, I tripped over a root and slammed down real hard, with knees and hands bleeding… On Friday my chest was still hurting, so I went to the doc and now I’m on painkillers as he thought that brething deeply would be a good idea. The doc also suggested I should take up a less dangerous sport. And then he asked if I planned to run the Hamburg Marathon in 2 weeks and was relieved when I said that I wasn’t planning on running, because last time I had a DNF with a dislocated disc, which was painful. When I told him that I was thinking about running an ultra in the summer instead, he rolled his eyes, put on a smile and suggested that we make an appointment for immediately after the run.
I think I will not try to snap a photo on a downhill any time soon. Also, I have to work on my tan.
What’s The Optimal Marathon Taper Length?
Tapering is totally counterintuitive for me as I always fear that I will lose all fitness within a few days. The article is doing a pretty good breakdown on how to taper before the big race. I just wish the site would carry less ads…
Super Shoes Aren’t Just for Elite Runners — How Running Brands Are Bringing These Tech-Loaded Styles to the Masses
I think this is a really positive trend, especially as these shoes will get more affordable soon. And it seems as if the barriers of entry in the running shoe business have been lowered as well, so lots of new players are entering the market now. Exciting times!
Running is everything to me. What if it’s time to say goodbye?
This is a question most of us will have to face sooner or later. Could you give up running?
How Do Olympic Athletes Sleep?
I always thought that the really good athletes sleep a lot and can structure their days around prioritizing sleep and recovery. Turns out they could do better.
Hardest Geezer: The man who ran the entire length of Africa
This is one heck of an accomplisment. I’m not sure this is something I would ever aspire to do. Still, amazing.
That’s all for now!
Thank you for reading Five Things Running. Remember to go paid now! It will make me run with a huge smile!

I once fell over a pot of flowers while browsing on Substack on my mobile.
Yikes, that looks like fresh scrapes. Hope you're on the mend? Thanks for sharing the pictures, Nico.
