Hi and welcome back to Five Things Running, the weekly newsletter with, you guessed it, five articles about running! Thanks for stopping by! If you haven’t subscribed, please do so now! And remember to go paid, because why not?
On Sunday I ran the third race of the Trailrunning Cup Harburger Berge, and even though “Berge” means mountains in German, and we only have hills up here in the North, I managed to get in more than 900m of vert. According to the routeplanner there was even 60m of alpine terrain included. Anyhow, I spent a little longer than I wanted on this route, also ran 2km longer than I wanted, because I constantly missed the right trail at the many intersections. I guess I need to improve my setup. As I’m too stupid to figure out how to run with navigation of my Coros Pace 2, I instead have the komoot app on my iPhone, which gives me voice commands, but leaves me confused all the time as I cannot figure out what “take a left” means when there are plenty of options that look leftish. So I ran with my iPhone in my hand most of the time, which also was a challenge due to sweat and rain. Also, I missed a root and did a nice dive into the beautiful heath. Now I look like I’m a boxer with a bloody nose… If you have any recommendations for a watch that does navigation for dummies, please let me know.
Without further ado, here’s today’s five articles! And remember to subscribe and go paid!
Digging Holes and Stopping Trains: The Need For Regular Recovery During Training
Great article about slowing down and getting some rest while training and pushing hard. I’m still on my #NDO effort and run every day, but mostly just 30 minutes. I do sleep more.
Can Strength Training Protect You from Running Injuries?
When I restartet my running this January after essentially a three months break, I started to do kettlebell swings and planks as well. I think that combination works pretty well to get more stability in my core and therefore less pain in my back. Turns out, the scientific evidence is not really there. I’m still sticking with my routine, now that I have done for more than six weeks already.
Racing after the void
What a story. I obviously never raced professionally, but I do get his sentiment.
The Winter Spine 2024 - The Race That Almost Killed Me
Ok, this race doesn’t sound fun at all. Would you run it? I understand the sense of accomplishment you feel after finishing this, but it sounds way too gruelsome to me. Also, 268 miles is a bit too much, methinks.
Making it: Bet on Yourself
When I watch trailrunning videos on Youtube I oftentimes think “wow, those guys are so lucky, they can hang out in running clothes all day long and just run in beautiful places” - turns out, the life of a pro trailrunner would be too exhausting for me. Also I’m too old and have too many mouths to feed.
That’s all for now!
Thank you for reading Five Things Running. Remember to go paid now! It will make me run with a huge smile!
Now, go running!
