Five Things Running: Issue #30
I ran across the Kohlbrandbrücke. Yes, that's a word. And a bridge.
On October 3, the German national holiday, 6000 runners ran across the second biggest street bridge in Germany. I was one of them. The Köhlbrandbrücke is an amazing monument which spans parts of the port of Hamburg and is 52 meters high, which makes it a very tall structure in the city. I’m not a big fan of road races, but running across this bridge, which is normally blocked for pedestrian traffic, was quite something. The bridge was erected 50 years ago and will probably be demolished in the next few years and then replaced by a new bridge or a tunnel, which is something the city government needs to decide soon before the bridge falls apart.
The run was across the bridge and then back across the bridge, with wind, and later rain, from all sides. The wind was so heavy that the police waited until 15 mins before the start to officially declare the bridge safe for running. And one day later the police had to seal off the whole bridge and the surroundings, because during some construction in the area they found an old bomb from WW2, which needed to be defused. This still happens all the time in Hamburg, so extensive were the bombings during WW2. Anyhow, the race was a lot of fun on those 12 km across the bridge and back.
Thanks for bearing with me while I shared my heroic deeds from the week. Maybe not as heroic as setting the world record at the Chicago Marathon, but nevertheless I’m a bit proud of my accomplishment. And kudos to Kelvin Kiptum!
Here’s today’s Five Things Running!
Should I Tune In or Tune Out During My Run?
Great question. And the answer is obviously: it depends. Get the why in this article!

My first marathon was canceled. I ran 26.2 miles anyway.
I like this attitude. If you trained for it, you might as well run it. I remember when I was out on my Sunday long run in April 2020 and lots of runners used my route as part of their effort to run a marathon as the Hamburg Marathon was canceled due to COVID-19.

A study of this champion's heart helped prove the benefits of exercise
I had never heard of Clarence DeMar, did you? What a lifetime full of achievements and then his autopsy provided a big service for science!

Running Debate: Lined vs. Unlined Shorts
I prefer shorts with a long compression liner and some nice front pockets and pockets on the liner as well. I hate running in shorts with a brief liner. What are your thoughts on this important question?

Is it selfish to run a marathon?
Nope. 😛
That’s all for now!
