Last week was UTMB and I still haven’t listened to the 500 or so podcasts dealing with the races and their winners. I have some catching up to do, I guess. Also, sorry for sending out this edition of Five Things Running so late in the day, but I went swimming again last evening instead of writing the newsletter. Swimming is still an utterly boring activity for me, but I have to acknowledge that my doctor was right and I should have taken up swimming a long time ago. Swimming really helps with my core stability and that in turn helps with my back issues and that in turn helps with my running.
Anyhow, I hope you like this edition of Five Things Running!

What Courtney Dauwalter Learned in the Pain Cave
Courtney Dauwalter is the GOAT of Trailrunning. This year she had three stellar performances in a row, she won Western States 100, Hardrock 100 and just this weekend she won UTMB as well. Amazing. But she didn’t just get there, there was lots of work involved.
How the 5-Panel Hat Took Over the Running World
My wife says that I have too many running caps. I don’t think so. I don’t like running without a cap and I’m really happy, that I’m a Fractal Brand Ambassador and get free running caps all the time. I started with a trucker cap, but have since converted to a five-panel cap as well. And every morning before I go running, I spend some time contemplating which cap would suit me best on this particular run.
Ultra Marathoner 101: Useful Tips for Beginners to Get Started
Just in case you got inspired by last week’s UTMB extravaganza or just think that a marathon just is not enough anymore, here’s a handy primer to get started.
3 powerful lessons all runners can take away from UTMB
Trailrunning is not yet the number one spectator sport - and honestly, who has time to follow a race that takes a day or longer? - but this is what you can learn from this year’s UTMB!
Midnight runners: the athletes up late to beat the scorching heat
I’m more of a morning person, but we all have different strategies to beat the heat of summer. That’s why I live Northern Germany, where the rain gets a bit warmer during the summer. Honestly, I thought Texas in March was okay for running, maybe a bit warm, so I don’t really want to experience running in Texas in the summer.
That’s all for now!
Thank you for reading Five Things Running. This post is public so feel free to share it.
