Five Things - Rain Edition
Grab a cup of tea, enjoy the weather outside and read these five articles now!
This week was my first real work week of the year and honestly it felt really great. Everybody I talked to agreed that we need to leave 2022 behind and do great things in 2023, regardless of how messed up everything is in Ukraine. So let’s see how this will work out, but so far this year has been promising. Well, except for all this rain instead of snow.
On a personal note I have to say that Dry January is something that works out really well for me (and was necessary after December). I like how one can try new things in January. I’m also using a to-do list app now, instead of just having other people remind me all the times that I have to do something. We’ll see how that goes, so far I’m surprised how structured I can be if I want to. The only sucky thing so far this year has been my annoying foot pain, but the doctor told me to go running again today and this is something I have been looking forward to for a few weeks now. I like running in the cold yucky rain, it makes you feel so alive when you get back home into the warm house and take a hot shower.
American Democracy Is Still in Danger
I think it is important to be reminded of this constantly. Democracy and a free Western society is nothing we should take for granted - quite on the contrary. Russia and China will still mess with us in more ways we expect or want to notice. We should pay more attention to what’s going on.
‘We need to work together to survive’: Icelandic start-ups are inventing new ways to tackle climate breakdown
The Iceland Ocean Cluster is a network of innovative startups in Iceland that tackle climate change and create new solutions by using byproducts from the fishing industry. Iceland really has some very creative people on this small island somewhere far away in the North.
"Cities should not just build green transport but actively dismantle car infrastructure"
It sounds too drastic, but there is no other way. We have to get the cars out of the city streets and instead create bike lanes and pedestrian zones. And obviously modern public transport is necessary, both under and above ground.
Where the AI Art Boom Came From—and Where It’s Going
I’ve been investing in create AI tech for more than five years now and the current developments are really breathtaking - and big improvement over what was possible just five years ago. DALL-E2 is really amazing stuff, but AI generated video will change everything in just a few years.
Gary McKee: what it takes to run a marathon a day for a year
This is really impressive, both physically and mentally. When finished with a marathon, I could not run another one the next day. Also I wouldn’t want to do that either. But I was pretty surprised about myself when I found out a few days ago that a few weeks after running the marathon in Hamburg last year I had already signed up for the one in April. Now I just need to go running again.
That’s it for today. Enjoy Sunday.
