Five Things: GenerativeAI, Salmon, Gen Z, Book Styling, Punk
I really want spring now. Or snow. But not cold rain. Sun would also be great!
A big thank you for signing up for this newsletter and for telling your friends, neighbors, co-workers and innocent bystanders about it. Five Things is growing nicely right now with lots of people subscribing every day. If I keep this pace for the next couple of 100 years, Five Things will be bigger than the New York Times, of course only if they stop growing their subscriber base now…
Isn’t it awesome how this newfound creator hustle culture leads to everyone constantly asking everyone else to subscribe, share, like, repost and upgrade to a paid subscription? Brave new world! Aldous Huxley really had a few valid points.
With all this out of the way, let’s get on to the amazing Five Things I picked out this week!
ChatGPT Is a Blurry JPEG of the Web
GenerativeAI is amazing and oftentimes underwhelming at the same time. Sometimes it can be scary. This article gives a really good account of what ChatGPT can really do and what we should expect. [New Yorker]
Trouble at Sea
You can spot a German at a hotel buffet right away, because we always load plenty of salmon on our plates. I’m also very fond of this wonderful fish, in fact we’ll have smoked salmon for our Sunday brunch, because my wife complains that I make pan-fried salmon too often. Anyhow, this article about salmon in the pacific northwest shows that the future for salmon is not that rosy. [bioGraphic]
This Is What Gen Z Actually Wants From Their Jobs Right Now
Gen Z remains mysterious to a lot of people, especially when it comes to the workplace. Some people tend to think that Gen Z is rather lazy, but I hope that they just exactly know what they don’t want as they have seen how their parents spent too much time in the office. Also, they know that they are in high demand and can act different than people in my age group (Gen X) could 20 years ago. [Glamour]
Inside the Picture Perfect—and Highly Lucrative—Business of Book Styling
I love books, but I’m not such a big fan of reading on paper, so my library is mostly on my kindle. For me, book cases are a waste of space, but I do have to admit that they can look really nice and also a bit sophisticated, which can also depend on the type of books you’re hoarding. Little did I know that this can be taken to lucrative extremes! [Literary Hub]
‘Loud, dirty and simple’: Leicester’s punk collective for older women
Punk’s not dead! It’s just in Leicester now! “We write our own music and we’ve got a lot to say about everything we’re angry about. I’ve been enraged for years.” - that’s the spirit! Anarchy in the UK 2.0! I totally understand why they are angry, as the post-Brexit downward-spiral in Britain doesn’t leave much hope at the moment. [Guardian]
That’s it for today! I hope you liked these Five Things! If you want to read more awesome stories, here’s a suggestion for you: Refind has a great daily newsletter with five articles, automagically picked out for you by their algorithm. Check it out!
