Hello and welcome to the Five Things Curator’s Cut for January 2025 in which you can read five great articles that didn’t make it into the weekly cut. These articles were so good, I had to save them for my most esteemed readers, the ones that pay to read Five Things. If you haven’t subscribed yet, now would be a good time!
What a year this has been already! It feels as if 2025 started a long time ago, but it’s just been a month. While fascism is taking over the USA in a storm of Executive Orders, trying to dismantle the democratic institutions as quickly as possible, we had a seismic shift in Germany as well. On the day the German parliament commemorated the 80th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz, the conservative parties CDU and CSU decided to call for a vote on immigration laws that the far-right AfD would support. The vote has no effect on German lawmaking as it only sends a decision from parliament to the executive branch to deal with the issue in a manner outlined in the proposal. As we vote in 3 weeks time, this won’t happen. The only thing that happened is that now the once marginalized AfD has voted with the conservatives. After the vote, the leader of the opposition said he was sorry that this was the turnout, meanwhile the far-right fascists were celebrating their historic win.
I’m so sick of the populists everywhere destroying our liberal western democracies. Democracy is far from perfect, but still the best way to govern. We should strive to make it better instead of letting fascist take over. We had that before, I don’t want it back.
In this Five Things Curator’s Cut, we can first take a look at what got Germany to this point right now. It’s called “Schuldenbremse” and it needs to go. Then we take a look at Putin and how tries to use the war in Ukraine to reshape the global political landscape. Have you seen all these AG1 ads and want to know what this is all about? I learned so much in this article about supplements and about AG1 itself. The fourth article is an intriguing story about a series of robberies that the Australian police tried to solve for a long time. Finally, let’s look at the tech bros who now kiss the ring of their new leader and how pathetic they are.
Enjoy!
