Five Things AI: Zero Costs, Bubble, Services Revolution, Friend, Recipes
If you want to try to make sense of what's going on in AI, read this.
Hello and welcome back to Five Things AI!
You can be certain that I totally, 100% wrote this email just by myself, unlike the little girl in the cheesy Google Gemini ad that was just released in time for the Paris Olympics and resulted in a nice backlash on social media: Google Wins the Gold Media for the Worst Olympic Ad. And while I read so many things about how AI and creativity can go hand in hand and lead to better results, this clearly wasn’t the case here.
So this week let’s focus on the big trends in AI and take a view on how the industry develops. The big question is: are we in a bubble? if so, when will it burst? how much money will be poured into this thing before eventually everything dries up? I think we’re just at the beginning and we will see more huge investments soon, but not just into LLM platforms, but also into a variety of service offerings. And for the time being, consulting companies (like mine: NMA) will guide their clients through the unknown, making sense of recent developments and figuring out what this means for the clients.
Having said that, let’s dig in!
Why Big Tech Wants to Make AI Cost Nothing
This is an interesting argument, that’s worth exploring. Obviously, Big Tech has deep pockets and could let the incumbents run dry by basically just giving away AI for free as a new feature for their costumers. This way they could keep the competition at bay while simultaneously trying to readjust the expectations attached to anything AI related.
AI: Are we in another dot-com bubble?
Ever since the good old dotcom bubble, the big question that pundits ask whenever some new tech is getting introduced is “are we in another bubble?” - I think we’ll always be trying to figure out how we can make new tech useful and how to achieve product-market-fit. There will always be moments, when we think we’re in a huge bubble, because some company just got a huge investment at an obscene valuation for a product seemingly nobody needs or wants. And then we will reiterate and try new things and improve the tech we’re using. This is how we innovate.
AI Is a Services Revolution
This article is looking at the bubble argument from a different perspective and notices that the race for market domination in AI is far from over, in fact it is just beginning. Even though we already have some market leaders out there, the market shares aren’t at all divided up yet.
Wear This AI Friend Around Your Neck
And we’re looking at the topic of the bubble in AI development from yet again another angle. Is this just an overpriced Tamagotchi gadget or are the founders onto something totally new? I guess we’ll find out soonish.
‘One of the most disgusting meals I’ve ever eaten’: AI recipes tested
Honestly, I would have guessed that the recipes would not all be just wonderful, but I loved it when people actually try out what AI comes up with. I applaud the imagination of the AI when creating these new recipes, but I also like it when my kids are adventurous and try things like dipping wiener sausages into stracciatella yoghurt, something I’d never try.
