Heya and welcome back to Five Things AI!

It’s Friday, the day after Trump imposed tariffs on everyone and everything, except for Russia and North Korea. I am pretty sure that this will lead to an intensified debate about digital sovereignty in Europe and more focus on open source models. While Europe acknowledges that American LLMs are far ahead in the game, we need to rethink our strategies. I am pretty sure that the backlash will be severe for American tech companies, not because of tariffs imposed by the EU, but because of European businesses and consumers losing trust in American politics, companies and tech.

This so called “liberation day” will backfire in so many ways and as a European I deeply believe that this will make the EU more focused on developing a renewed sense of unity. This will make as stronger, as we need to figure out our own path for reaping the benefits on AI.
