Five Things AI: Scary AI, RIP Prompt Engineering, AI Safety, Klarna, Verticalization
AI inside. Just read it.
This week was full of news about AI again, but I’m not that interested in the latest product offerings as I much rather have a look at the big picture and the developments that shape the industry. I’m not saying that the launch of Claude 3 or Microsoft’s investment in Mistral doesn’t matter, but let’s rather look beyond this and discuss the bigger developments in the AI space.
My favorite headline of the week is the one about prompt engineering. Finally.
The Scariest Part About Artificial Intelligence
While I think that this article is a bit too alarmist, the author does have a point. All the raw computing power necessary to satisfy the huge demands of AI come at a cost. We need energy and water - and also rare materials for that. As an optimist, I assume that smart people will figure out solutions for that, but for now, the outlook really isn’t that bright.
AI Prompt Engineering Is Dead
Finally. Honestly, I have never understood why prompt engineers where seen as pure magicians when it was pretty clear, that they just spent more times fiddling with the machine than others, while most people got the answers they needed by asking the machine to come up with better prompts itself. And exactly this is what lots of models are doing now automagically to make the experience much better and to save computing power.

Researchers Develop New Technique to Wipe Dangerous Knowledge From AI Systems
AI Safety is an immensely huge topic at the moment, for obvious reasons. We all fear that polluted AI models lead to extremely undesirable outcomes. This new technique looks promising and could improve AI safety in the long run.
Klarna AI assistant handles two-thirds of customer service chats in its first month
This is a press release from Klarna, so I would take it with a grain of salt. But the writing is on the wall: there will be lots of AI in the service and support offerings soon, replacing lots of people and making the process much faster for customers.
The Lifeblood of the AI Boom
Big Tech needs to scale AI and has to grow it vertically by connecting it with existing software and hardware. So pretty soon AI inside will be everywhere.
