Five Things AI: Robotics, Antibodies, Travel Guides, Developing Countries, Church
AI all around my brain.
Oh, Eliza.
Do you remember the excitement when you started to play around with ELIZA? Back in the early 80s, on a Commodore 64, it was so much fun to ask questions and get answers and it gave a glimpse what could happen in a far away future.
Only 40 years later, we can talk with all sorts of AI chatbots, including tools like personal.ai, that claim to be something like a digital version of you and therefore can become your personal assistant who always knows what you like and want.
This development is so awesome, and yet again, most people continue to interact with AI a much more basic way, or who hasn’t tried bairbe.me to create an AI-assisted photo of you that makes you look like Barbie or Ken?
What used to be really advanced stuff, still is really advanced stuff, but we’re seeing more and more user interfaces that are suitable for mainstream usage.

When AI and Robotics Combine
To be honest, I thought, and feared, that the Russian war on Ukraine would bring us more than remote controlled drones, I assumed that new tanks currently under development would be deployed, like during the Spanish Civil War when new innovations were tested. I’m still unsure what to make of killer robots mounted on a tank. It sounds dystopian, but when it defends your city or your country, you probably start thinking different about it.
AI Is Building Highly Effective Antibodies That Humans Can’t Even Imagine
“The model selects more than 700 initial options from across a search space of 100,000 potential antibodies, and then automatically designs, builds, and tests them, with the aim of finding potentially fruitful areas to investigate in more depth. Think of choosing the perfect car from a field of thousands: You might start by choosing a broad color, and then filter from there into specific shades.” - just think about this and how this will change the development of drugs in general and change the health sector.
A New Frontier for Travel Scammers: A.I.-Generated Guidebooks
It’s summer - time to travel! Just be a bit careful about interesting sounding travel guides that could be created with the help of an AI and may be a little more creative with tips for a destination than you hoped for.
Artificial Intelligence for the Poor
I have a very Western view on mostly everything, including AI. So it’s good to take a step back and look at other parts of the world and get an idea of the challenges that people for instance in Africa could face when more and more AI systems are being deployed and used.
Magisterium AI: A Game Changer for the Church?
Ok, I admit that I don’t usually read the National Catholic Register, but as somebody who studied medieval history and was never really interested in the bible, I would have loved to just quickly look something up when again something in the bible was referenced in an old text and I didn’t know or understand what it is about. It will be interesting how this will effect church and how many sermons will soon be written with the help of an AI in the hope that people will understand it better. Or just to save time.
