Five Things AI: Personal Data, AI Chips, Power, Emotions, Full Body Deepfakes
Oh wow, it's Friday again. Let's look at what's going on in AI!
Hi and welcome back to Five Things AI! My name is Nico Lumma and every week I like to share five interesting articles about AI with you. So instead of researching for hours on the web, just read these five articles here and you are all set. As I’m saving you a couple of hours every week, I’d really appreciate it if you could go paid and spend the equivalent of one large café latte on this newsletter.
Every week, I think about how I should intro this newsletter and honestly, every week I’m very tempted to start with “WHAT A WEEK IN AI, AGAIN!”. Just by looking at the five articles I selected for this week, you can see what’s going on right now. It’s fascinating to see that startups try to develop new chips focused on AI, at the same time Microsoft tried to make snapshots of everything we do on a Windows PC look like a good thing and Apple moves AI to the iPhone. We begin to understand how much power AI is using and that this will not just challenge the current grid infrastructure, but it also makes the transition to clean energy a lot more complex. And at the same time deepfakes are getting better and better. So, wow. Let’s try to make sense of all this and try to get into the next week of quick AI developments.
Thanks! And if you don’t go paid, at least share this newsletter with everyone you know! 🕺
What the Arrival of A.I. Phones and Computers Means for Our Data
We’re in the middle of a huge paradigm shift in AI - it’s getting personal and up close. Of course we will continue to have huge LLM platforms, but our laptops and smartphones will get more and more AI capabilities - and this obviously means that our personal data will be connected to AI.
Etched is building an AI chip that only runs one type of model
While NVIDIA is in the spotlight right now, more and more startups are trying to get into chip design and offer new solutions that could provide a boost in compute power. This is definitely something to watch as the race is heating up.
AI is exhausting the power grid. Tech firms are seeking a miracle solution.
This is an interesting dilemma for Big Tech to solve. The companies need more power for their data centers and at the same time the industry needs to shift to clean energy sources. I doubt fusion will be in use any time soon, but I strongly believe in R&D in tech to come up with new and innovative solutions to power data centers and make our electrical grids more efficient.
Are you 80% angry and 2% sad? Why ‘emotional AI’ is fraught with problems
“Emotional AI’s essential problem is that we can’t definitively say what emotions are.” - still, more and more companies are looking into Emotional AI and try to better customize their offerings for its users.
Synthesia’s hyperrealistic deepfakes will soon have full bodies
This is fascinating. And at the same time also a bit scary. But as video content is all around us and continues to be the preferred way for lots of people to consume content, we will see more of this everywhere.
