Five Things AI: Music, Writing, Fragrances, Hollywood, Geopolitics
What a week in AI, again. Read on.
This week a short one in Germany due to our national holiday on Tuesday. I spent Wednesday and Thursday traveling to Karlsruhe and to Brunswick to deliver talks on AI and its implications for business and society. I like doing those talks as this lets me organize my thoughts on AI a bit more and also leads to interesting discussions with the audience. The attention is huge at the moment, as a lot of people are trying to make sense of what they see and hear about AI. And yes, you can book me for a keynote, just email me at nico@lumma.de or reply to this email.🕺
This week was filled with plenty of interesting announcements from OpenAI, Anthropic and others. There is no slowing down the development of AI in sight and the investments are still huge. Also, NVIDIA is still going strong and companies are trying lots of venues to find graphic processors. Pretty soon investors will expect some ideas about making money with AI platforms and this will be interesting to watch.

Hannah Diamond Has Cracked the Code of Using AI for Music
Music, AI, Copyright - there is so much tension between these three things, it will be interesting how the music industry will be moving forward, as artists, composers, songwriters, recoding studios, publishers, and labels will be trying to get a piece of the (music) cake in the future.

What Humans Lose When AI Writes for Us
While I find it fascinating that GenerativeAI can compose readable text, I’m not sold on the idea to read autogenerated stories or books. Losing the human touch will take a lot away from the text to make it really enjoyable.

How AI and Brain Science Are Helping Perfumiers Create Fragrances
Apart from having read Patrick Süskind’s “Perfume” a long time ago, I really have no knowledge on how perfumes are getting created. I just knew that lots of testing is involved in creating the perfect scent. Adding AI to the mix seems to take everything to the next level.

Hollywood’s Deal With Screenwriters Just Rewrote the Rules Around A.I.
While most of us are probably happy that new content for tv and the movie theaters will be produced, it’s important to see how this deal shaped the situation of the writers when it comes to AI. This is one really important step for workers not just in the creative industries.

‘AI is transformative for the geopolitical order,’ Ian Bremmer says
Ian Bremmer is right about pointing out the global ramifications of AI. What is happening right now is so much more than creating the ability to generate images, it creates a new shift in power and it will create three distinct blocs when it comes to AI regulation: USA, China and Europe. I doubt that we’ll get the UN to regulate anything in this area any time soon.
