My Name is Nico Lumma, I have been investing in and working with AI startups since 2015 - and guess what? AI still fascinates me a lot! In fact, it fascinates me so much, that I read a lot about it and share the five most interesting articles about AI every week. So, welcome to Five Things AI, I compiled these articles just for you!
This week the articles will cover how Google wants to change search, how the EU tries to regulate AI, how bots decide in wargames simulations, how Open Source AI models face challenges and bring hope, and how Ukraine has turned into an AI War Lab.
Lots of stuff to read and digest

Google Prepares for a Future Where Search Isn’t King
Do you remember when ChatGPT-3 was launched and all of a sudden Microsoft seemed to be having an edge on Google when it integrated GenerativeAI into Bing? It’s not that Google lost any real marketshare because of this, but people at Google told me how worried everybody was when they saw no immediate response from Google. I guess that is changing now and it’s looks like it is much more than just renaming Bard into Gemini.
The EU’s artificial intelligence rulebook, explained
Honestly, I think it is nearly impossible to regulate AI in a way that everybody is happy about it. The EU took upon this Herculean task and this is the first version of the EU AI Act. I assume that talks about the next version will have to start real soon now as the industry is moving forward so quickly. Here’s a rundown of the main points.
AI chatbots tend to choose violence and nuclear strikes in wargames
I guess these bots were not trained properly and need to get more into tic tac toe to understand more about the way wars end.
VCs and startups love open-source AI models — but how will they make money?
This is a good discussion that is just getting started. People, and even more so, companies, worry about their data and want to know what is happening with it on an AI platform. So certification will be one business model that will gain lots more traction, and the other model will be open source, which adds much needed transparency to AI.
How Tech Giants Turned Ukraine Into an AI War Lab
The war in Ukraine certainly changed Europe’s perception about the military and lots of entrepreneurs and investors are rushing into defensetech. Lots of new tech gets deployed in Ukraine right now and it has an impact on the war.
