Five Things: AI Doomsday, Putin's Russia, Digital Nomads, AI Deepfakes, Ted Lasso
You want to read this email. It will make your Sunday much better.
It’s Sunday Morning and this is the latest edition of Five Things!✌🏻
Hi, my name is Nico and I’m a very curious person who likes reading great journalism, well argued opinion pieces and lengthy articles full of research. Every Sunday I put together an email with links to five articles which I find really interesting. The selection of the articles is based on my current interests. I sincerely hope that you find these articles as worthwile your time as I did. I don’t wan’t to ruin your Sunday. 🤓
Amazing, it’s June already. I love this month. Finally it’s getting warmer outside, the days are getting sooo long and I have more energy. Last Wednesday, which was still May, my wife and I went to Berlin to see Kings of Leon performing live at the Waldbühne in Berlin. That was amazing, and I’m really happy I gave my wife the tickets for her birthday. I’m glad she took me a long. I’ve never been at the Waldbühne - this is such an amazing venue. Built by the Nazis for the Olympics in 1936 and inspired by the Greek amphitheater, this is truly a one of a kind venue, which was packed with 22,000 people. In the nice evening sun. Just wonderful.
This week leading AI experts issued a warning with some drastic words: “Mitigating the risk of extinction from AI should be a global priority alongside other societal-scale risks such as pandemics and nuclear war.” - I sure hope we could make climate change a global priority, but I disgress. So is this a true fear or is this just hype, trying to make AI sound more important? I don’t know, but we should watch the future development closely.
Have a great Sunday and enjoy Five Things! ✌🏻
I’m a rational optimist. Here’s why I don’t believe in an AI doomsday.
Yes, I do know about the potential AI has to be this totally evil thing that wrecks humanity. But I think we can still influence the path of AI. And as long as ChatGPT doesn’t get the basic facts right, I’m not too worried. (Big Think)
What Comes After Putin's Rule in Russia. The West Should Beware
Well, this is an interesting piece on Russia, the KGB, the mafia and how all of this won’t get better after Putin is gone. Amazing how Russia has not changed in centuries. Slava Ukraini! (Time)
When Digital Nomads Come to Town
So in essence digital nomads lead to a massive form of gentrification. I never assumed that enough people with big (or Western) paycheques would settle in a town to really change the place. I was just always annoyed by the digital nomads lifestyle because I could never pull it off. (Rest of World)
AI Deepfakes of True Crime Victims Are a Waking Nightmare
This is just sick. What kind of people come up with those ideas?
In Defense of Ted Lasso
The third season was different than the other two. But it was still pretty amazing. And the author is right: the show is just what we need right now. I’m a big fan of the show and I think I should get a moustache. (Slate)
That’s it. Have an amazing Sunday!
