Five Things AI: Destruction, Governance, Managable Risks, Antibiotics, Learning
AI is really all the rage right now. Find out why in this newsletter.
Google Bard launched today in Germany. I played around with it and asked it who I am. According to Google Bard I was born in Berlin in 1990 and I am a very famous and successful DJ and music producer. My first album was called “Nico Lumma”.
I didn’t know all that. But I don’t want to say that Google Bard is just stupid, because OpenAI writes that I am one of the founders of MySpace. My guess is that both of the systems are just really creative when it comes to presenting facts.
Anyhow, also this week the big news broke that Elon Musk started his AI company. Aside from the fact that we now know why he argued for a pause in AI development a few months ago, I’m really worried about the way Musk will treat a powerful AI system. Hopefully he will do it better than the way he handles sensitive issues at Twitter. Unfortunately, we will have to wait and see how this develops. Hopefully the FTC will monitor this closely.

Five ways AI might destroy the world: ‘Everyone on Earth could fall over dead in the same second’
This sounds like a typical Roland Emmerich movie. I still hope that we’ll get our collective acts together and come up with smart ways to regulate AI. We will probably see Bond-style villains trying to use AI to establish some sort of evil power. cybersecurity will be redefined in the next couple of months and lots of money will be deployed on the intersection of cybersecurity and AI, hoping to secure our infrastructures.
Meta Ran a Giant Experiment in Governance. Now It’s Turning to AI
Setting up quasi-democratic non-governmental global governance structures is probably not the easiest task, but it is interesting how much work has been done in this field by Meta and other large global companies.
The risks of AI are real but manageable
Bill Gates has made some predictions in the past that were absolutely bonkers, like the one about the internet being just a passing fad, but this essay is spot on. My assumption is that he won’t be amused when governments really start to regulate AI as he will probably claim that the regulation will harm innovation and business.
AI Could Quickly Screen Thousands of Antibiotics to Tackle Superbugs
While people are fascinated about chatbots right now, we will quickly see advances around the development of new pharmaceuticals. We know how antibiotics resistance is a growing problem for the treatment of a lot of people. AI can help to quickly mitigate this issue by developing new types of antibiotics.
Learn a Foreign Language Before It’s Too Late
Learning something takes time. Will we forget what it is like to learn, to repeat something until we know how to do it? Will every hurdle just be too much, because AI makes everything nice and easy? As much as I like being able to use AI for a quick translation or a quick summary, we are looking for the easy way out probably a bit too often.
