Five Things AI: AI Canon, Moral AI, Photoshopping, Governance, Outsmarting AI
Everybody is doing AI now. Read this to stay in the know.
There is so much going on in the world of artificial intelligence right now. It’s amazing, it’s breathtaking and it can be overwhelming and sometimes even frightening.
I’m Nico, I have been involved in tech for over 20 years and I still enjoy it. I’m trying to help you navigate through everything AI by compiling the most interesting and recent articles on AI for you. Read this and you know what’s going on.
If you have been reading Five Things for a while, you might have noticed that I have started new sections recently: Five Things Tech and Five Things Running. Now Five Things AI will be yet another section of Five Things. If you don’t want to read each and every Five Things newsletter section, feel free to manage your subscriptions here - just don’t unsubscribe all, ok?
Another week where the development of AI is just crazy. The stock of chipmaker NVIDIA is going through the roof, because of the demands of AI. Adobe Firefly will redefine photography, image creation and the agency model in just a few months, making it easier than ever to be creative, but also putting lots of jobs in danger. ChatGPT can now browse the web for you to get the answers for your prompts and will become your handy little companion for all sorts of things that required multiple steps before. And meanwhile new apps and plugins and tools explode on the scene that work with the API of ChatGPT, StableDiffusion and others. It’s fun to watch, but also a bit much.
This is what you should read about AI this week.
AI Canon
The VC firm Andreesen Horowitz has put together an extensive reading list on all aspects of AI. If you want to understand what is happening right now, you can take a deep dive here. (a16z)
Waluigi, Carl Jung, and the Case for Moral AI
This will be one of the major issues in AI development. How can we make sure that AI doesn’t turn bad? And how can we figure out when an AI just might trick us into thinking that it is a good AI? The biggest issue is that the development is so fast and our thinking and deliberation takes times. (Wired)
A.I. Photoshopping Is About to Get Very Easy. Maybe Too Easy.
Adobe Firefly is really amazing and it unleashes a lot of creativity for people like me who can’t draw a straight line. At the same time, we’ll probably see a gazillion modified photos real soon that will make us want to see raw imperfection again. (The New York Times)
Governance of superintelligence
It’s a smart move by OpenAI CEO Sam Altman to go to Washington, D.C. and talk to lawmakers about regulation and making some suggestions about how to create laws that will help regulate AI. It is not so smart to threaten to leave the EU when the EU starts discussing some actual proposed legislation. (OpenAI)
America’s Math Coach Is Teaching Fifth-Graders to Outsmart AI
The title of the talk is “How to Survive the ChatGPT Invasion.” - and I assume that this helps in getting some attention. His advice is pretty smart, too: be more human. This helps not just when dealing with AI. (Wall Street Journal)
