Five Things AI: Integration vs Modularization, Open vs Closed, Learnings, Trust, Mirrors
Wow, it's Friday again! Time to take a look at five articles about AI!
Hi and welcome back to Five Things AI! My name is Nico Lumma and every week I like to share five interesting articles about AI with you. So instead of researching for hours on the web, just read these five articles here and you are all set. As I’m saving you a couple of hours every week, I’d really appreciate it if you could go paid and spend the equivalent of one large café latte on this newsletter.
This week we’ll take a look at the different strategies Big Tech is deploying in the field of AI, because there are different approaches and some might make more sense in the long run. Or maybe not. We’re still so early in the development if AI. We also take a look at the question around closed or open source LLM. You can also take a deeper dive into one year of building with LLM and what the authors learned while doing so, including all the changes that happened in a year. Then we’ll have a look at Sam Altman and the obvious issue of trust at OpenAI. Finally, I invite you to read a longer piece about AI and the promises it holds - or doesn’t hold for that matter.
Enjoy Five Things AI and have a great start into the weekend!
AI Integration and Modularization
This is a really interesting read as it takes a closer look behind the strategies of Big Tech when it comes to the big question of integrated vs modular AI. It seems that so far Google is taking a very integrated approach, which resembles a bit the old Apple vs PC approach. It’s definitely food for thought!
The future of foundation models is closed-source
makes an interesting argument for closed-source LLMs. But then he writes: “I admit I have an allergic reaction when many open-source advocates expose their socialist tendencies from Europe, academia, or both.” - and this makes me think that maybe open-source is not that bad after all. What We Learned from a Year of Building with LLMs (Part I)
If you want to get some insights about building with LLM and what to take into consideration, have a look at this resource with plenty of links to follow to get even deeper into the topic.
“I lost trust”: Why the OpenAI team in charge of safeguarding humanity imploded
Move fast and brake things used to be Zuck’s thing, but it seems that Sam Altman is even more careless. I’d be interested to find out how the adults in the room, that are hopefully still there, will deal with this in the months and years to come.
AI Is a Hall of Mirrors
“AI isn’t the omniscient sidekick, ready with whatever measure of revelation would be useful to you at the moment. It’s a Cubist portrait of the things we have already said and made, that by combining our facets becomes either passing or passing strange.” - here’s something to think about.
